
Ms. Markowitz’s commercial experience includes representing clients in various trademark and copyright disputes, including those raising novel issues of intellectual property rights in cyberspace; representing clients in actions involving trade secrets, covenants not to compete, interference claims, contract disputes, fraud and concealment claims, and other business torts; and representing companies in various commercial and licensing disputes.
Ms. Markowitz’s experience in environmental matters includes the handling of class action, multi-plaintiff and individual toxic tort actions involving alleged environmental and occupational exposures. Such representations include a class action in the U.S. Virgin Islands in which residents claim exposure to bauxite and other substances blown from an alumina refinery during a hurricane, an action by several hundred plaintiffs involving alleged exposure to substances emanating from the Stringfellow disposal site, and numerous actions by individuals claiming exposure to substances used in the workplace. Ms. Markowitz also represents corporations in actions involving claims of alleged failures to warn and in actions alleging spills during delivery or during other services. Ms. Markowitz has also represented numerous parties both in private and government cost recovery actions under CERCLA, and has represented corporations in actions against insurance companies for multi-jurisdictional coverage for environmental liabilities.
Ms. Markowitz has second-chaired several trials and arbitrations to verdict/award, including an arbitration concerning the failed development of a solid waste landfill, a jury trial in a trade secrets action involving Internet technology, and trial/arbitration of several commercial business disputes.
She attended Stanford Law School (J.D., 1992), was Note Editor, Stanford Law Review 1991-1992, and Articles Editor Stanford Environmental law Journal 1990-1991. Her undergraduate degree is from Brandeis University (B.A., 1987) in Computer Science and Anthropology, Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude.
Ms. Markowitz is a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Association; DRI; Board Member, Levitt & Quinn (nonprofit law firm); Board Member, MOSTE (non-profit mentoring organization).
